Evansville 1918 Board of Public Safety

Evansville 1918 Board of Public Safety

The Board of Public Safety had oversight of the police and fire departments. Dubbed “Safers” by the press, it was not uncommon for these and other public officials to also hold positions in private business. For example, Henry Karges was treasurer of the New Vendome Hotel and a member of the board of directors of Globe-Bosse-World furniture factories. John Wimberg was the Third Ward Conscription Registrar as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the Lamasco Building and Loan Association. Herbert Males later became Sheriff and then Mayor of Evansville.
